Garage Door Springs: Tampa Garage Door Repair and Replacement Services

Garage door springs are responsible for lifting the weight of the garage door, either manually or using the garage door opener. The steel garage door springs face enormous forces every time the door opens or closes. Over time, the steel weakens and eventually cracks or breaks. How often you need to replace the springs depends on how much you use your garage door.

Torsion Garage Door Springs

Modern garage doors have torsion springs along the top of the door. Galvanized garage door springs are made of soft drawn steel which loses its strength quickly and becomes limp, eventually failing. Choosing a non-galvanized spring made of hardened spring steel will prolong the life of your springs and provide you with better value. Non-galvanized torsion springs are made of hardened spring steel which retains its strength better, but even hardened steel springs break eventually, sometimes dramatically, requiring a garage door spring replacement.

Warning Signs That You Need Garage Door Spring Replacement

If your garage door is resting at an angle or does not lift or close properly, one of the springs may need attention. Also look for signs of wear or cracking on the spring. A good test to determine whether your garage door springs are operating properly is to disconnect the garage door opener and try to raise the door. If the door lifts easily and stops when you let go, then everything is working properly. If not, then you may need garage door spring replacement.

Garage Door Extension Springs

Garage door extension springs are found on older garage doors. They are usually installed above the horizontal tracks or along the sides of the garage door. The springs stretch and contract to balance the weight of the door and allow smooth operation. Most residential garage doors with extension springs have two springs, one on either side of the door. Extension springs are not rated to withstand hurricane force winds, and are weaker than torsion springs. If your garage door employs extension springs, consider upgrading to a torsion spring system that is capable of withstanding the occasional hurricane conditions experienced in the Tampa Bay area.
